Why does my dog whine so much? Is he jealous?
I have a jack russel terrier mix, well two and a chihuahua. The boy is named Tiger. He usually gets a lot more attention than the other dogs but we treat all 3 like our babies, my mom calls them her grandchildren. He gets the most time in the house. They usually sleep outside in a very nice wooden home but during cold weather they all enjoy my bed. Anywho, when his sister comes inside of the house without him (I like to give them all 1 on 1 time) he starts to pretty much scream cry scratch the door like he is crazy! Ive run outside thinking hes in danger because his yells are so loud! He also wont let me sleep in the morning sometimes he scratches and cries at my door til he wakes me up. Is he a jealous dog? Why is he like that? I love him but I am not sure why he is so whiny. Just a concern. How can I fix this?
Well if he’s the one that spends the most time inside the house and suddenly finds himself outside while one of his brothers is inside, it might make him jealous. Was Tiger the first one to become part of your family? Dogs have a really marked sense of hierarchy and he might feel like his place is being threatened. Sometimes my dog barks and scratches me when I’m sleeping so that I’ll take him outside to pee or feed him. Some dogs are more whiny than others! They all have different personalities and Tiger’s a little spoiled. If it’s really worrying and stressing you out, contact a trainer.

Dogs are pack animals. If they are excluded from the main part of the pack or the pack leader then it’s basically like telling them you are willing to leave them out to die. It’s not jealousy. It’s like being at a party where no one talks to you, this guy won’t let you in to the room your friends are in, and and you feel like an outcast. Dogs are social like people and form close social bonds. Sometimes that instinct does go a little overboard and gets termed "seperation anxiety". If you do a search for that you’ll find plenty of ways to handle it and lessen your dogs reaction to being seperated. However do not expect any dog to happily stay seperated from majority of his pack. In fact I’d call it cruel to make a dog stay by itself for an extended period of time.

Hi!
There’s a short period in a puppy’s development, from very early puppyhood to three or four months of age, when his experiences have a big effect on his entire approach to life. If he has lots of positive encounters with other dogs, all kinds of humans, and new situations during that developmental window, he’s far more likely to grow up to be a confident, relaxed, and friendly dog. Trainers call this process socialization.
